Laura's Review:
I felt like this was actually two separate books with the same characters. The first half - the "romance" half, in my opinion - focused on Meg and Wes' relationship. And wow - did they ignite. As I've come to love from Genna Rulon's books, the witty, fast-paced dialogue was present - and there was some fun, sexy bantering as they tried to decide if they hated or loved each other. I LOVED this part of the book. But, all through this first half, Meg kept referring to a secret - and this is where the story got weird for me. Because, even though this "secret" she's keeping from everyone basically makes up who she is as a person, she doesn't even divulge it in her inner thoughts that we, the reader, are privy to. It became increasingly frustrating and unbelievable to read without knowing this about her past (without spoilers, it's hard to explain why, but you'd understand if you read it.) And then, when we do learn what she's been hiding, it became even more unbelievable. In no way did I believe that this person with this past could become who is she at this point of the book. No way. So, the second half of the book became a series of me shaking my head in disbelief. The storyline was very unique - which is pretty difficult to find nowadays - and that alone was enough to compel me to keep reading. But, the romantic tension between Meg and Wes after the big reveal? Gone. And I get why, but a lot of my interest from that point on was gone with it. I really wish Ms. Rulon interwove the romance and the suspense a bit better to make them both stretch throughout the entire book, as she did in the first novels of this series (the first one of which was one of my favorite books of 2013.)
