Review Tour & Giveaway: Only for You by Genna Rulon

Title:   Only for You (For You #1)
Author:  Genna Rulon
Genre: New Adult
Publication Date:  September 24, 2013
Event organized by: Literati Author Services, Inc.

Synopsis

“In its purest form love is self-sacrificing, eternal, selfless, enduring, truthful, forgiving and indulgent. It also feels an awful lot like a kick to the stomach when you try to fight it!
All Everleigh Carsen wanted to do was complete her final semester at Hensley University and begin the life she carefully planned.
When a wave of violent crime seizes campus, Everleigh is persuaded to attend a school sponsored self-defense seminar by her best friend, where she meets volunteer instructor, Hunter Charles. After Everleigh’s biting sarcasm induces Hunter to eject her from class, a tempestuous relationship is born.
Everleigh is determined to forget the striking man, but fate–that fickle shrew–continuously intervenes. Unable to escape him, she declares Hunter an enemy combatant. The only complication… Hunter is resolutely pursuing vindication…by any means necessary. Verbal warfare ensues, and despite Everleigh’s ingenious efforts, in Hunter, she has finally found her equal.
Only For You is a compelling tale of friendship, desire, and redemption--brimming with intelligent characters, witty dialogue, unexpected twists, profound sorrow, unfettered hope, and love’s unassailable perseverance.
Note:  Although this is series, each novel can be read as a stand alone.

Laura's Review:

I LOVED this book! Easily one of my top ten of the year. It reminded me of a slightly more mature, slightly less angst-y Beautiful Disaster with the quick wit and fast paced dialogue of a Gilmore Girls episode. The love-hate relationship between Everleigh and Hunter had sparks flying off the page right from the start. Then their not-so-platonic friendship filled the book with so much tension, I think I could feel it burning up my nook. I couldn't get enough and stayed up for hours reading. The campus serial killer plot was a little on the predictable side, but had enough twists thrown in to keep it very interesting. As soon as I finished reading this one, I picked it up and re-read all my favorite passages again...twice. Cannot wait for Ev's best friend's story next!

Only For You: 5/5 stars

Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

Excerpt:

Fueling the plane didn’t take near as long as I thought it would and after a fast meal, we were back in the air. There was a renewed sense of energy in the plane. Sarah was making phone calls and Alex had opened up his laptop. At some point Duvall and Rebecca changed into suits that would blend into the background but still had a formal look. Rose went to the little area in front of the kitchen and pulled a curtain shut. She called for Sarah to help before coming out in a silver dress with a matching jacket. It was simple but elegant.
“We don’t have much longer if you want to go ahead and change.” Alex nodded toward the little curtained area.
I stood up and made my way to the alcove. I pulled the curtain shut and opened the tiny closet that held my garment bag. I quickly undressed and fought the dress out of the bag before remembering that I needed to put on panty hose. Cursing under my breath, I dug into the bottom of the bag. The plane hit a bit of turbulence and I bounced into the wall before almost falling through the curtain in nothing but my underwear.
“Holy crap!” I stood up and prayed I hadn’t knocked the curtain open.
“Samantha?” Alex’s voice was nearby and my eyes grew large. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine! What are you paying these pilots?”
A few people chuckled while I wrestled the panty hose up. Worried about more turbulence, I slid the dress on as fast as possible. Reaching behind me, I tried to grab the zipper but ended up spinning in circles like a puppy.
“Sarah?” I called for Rose’s assistant, giving up.
“I’ve got it.” Alex’s voice made me freeze. I heard the curtain whisper as he stepped into the area. “Zipper?”
“Um, yeah.” I turned my back to him. The zipper started low and I was highly aware of the fact that he could see the lace panties and bra I was wearing. His warm fingers grazed my skin as he unhurriedly pulled the zipper over the top of my butt and up my back.
“Lift your hair.” He leaned down and whispered in my ear.
Slowly I reached up and gathered my hair in my hands. He slid the zipper into place before reaching down and sliding his hands around my waist. He pressed his chest against my back while he looked over my shoulder. Deftly, he pulled the belt through the loops and fastened it in the front. It was painfully erotic to know that he was taking his time dressing me and my breathing was matching the excitement of my thoughts. When he pulled back, I let my hair fall and turned to face him without stepping out of his hold.
He was already wearing a tux, the bowtie hanging open, and no shoes. It was a look that worked for him. He looked down at me with hungry eyes. “You look gorgeous.”
“Thank you.” His hands were still on my waist and I was having flashbacks to our kiss.
“This is going to be difficult.” He leaned back a little so he could run his eyes over my body. “Very difficult.”

“All good things are worth the work.” I didn’t have to ask him what he was talking about because I was thinking the same thing. Being friends with Alex would be one of the hardest things I’d ever done.

Blurb

Julie Marone isn’t your ordinary matchmaker. Instead of setting up singles, she matches already-happy couples with their dream homes. It’s her calling. Her gift. And since she lost the other half of her own happy couple, it’s become her passion.
Cody Brown isn’t your ordinary cowboy. Instead of roping runaway steers, he wrangles sick kids and strung-out junkies as an ER doc. It’s his job. His responsibility. And since his brother lost his wife to a drunk driver, it’s his mission.
When Cody moves from Austin to Boston, he wants Julie to find him a condo, and fast. But she’s got issues with that. Because not only is Cody single, he’s a doctor to boot, and ever since her fiancé died, she’s got a major grudge against doctors.
Cody charms her into breaking her “couples-only” rule, but when he angles to be her date for her sister’s Christmas Eve wedding, he finds out Julie’s “no-doctor” rule is unbending. Still, he’s not quitting, because as hard as Julie fights it, there’s heat between them. If Cody has his way, they’ll be a couple by Christmas, and the next dream house Julie finds will be their own.

EXCERPT
As her body chilled, her mind overheated. Her thoughts jumbled together, a montage of despair. Cody sprinting through the cold. Victims bleeding on the pavement. David sucking his last breath. The grisly images ran together, indelibly linked, engraved on her brain.
Like a fast-moving poison, panic spread through her veins. She clutched the counter like it was her sanity, watched her knuckles turn white with the strain. This was why she steered clear of doctors. They stirred up the past, stuck a knife in her pain.
She’d been doing just fine before Cody came along with his drawl and his smile. She’d made a mistake letting him get close, and she was paying for it now with angst and cold sweat.

Promo Tour: Ascension by Stacey Rourke

Book Blurb:

From best selling and award winning author Stacey Rourke comes the heart-pounding continuation of the acclaimed Gryphon Series.
The turning point of the Gryphon saga is at hand …
Battle looms. Three unstoppable forces prepare to clash in a colossal explosion that could wipe Gainesboro off the map. Fate and a sacred calling have landed nineteen year old Celeste Garrett in the middle with nowhere to run.
Her trust wavers as she uncovers dark secrets of the Council, powerful enough to test her loyalty and turn her against those she swore to protect. Playing to the longing of her heart, a malevolent enemy uses her weakness against her to form an alliance.
With the trumpets of war about to sound, which side will the Conduit choose, and who will be left standing?

Excerpt:
Blood pooling. Seeping. Merging. Swirling together to form a detailed map of carnage. “Tsk, tsk, tsk.” The Countess pursed her full lips in a mock pout. “And to think he was trying to save you. You must feel simply dreadful right now.” Anger quickened my breath, making each word come out a breathless gasp. “Shut … up.” “Why’s that?” She rested her palms on her ample hips and let her head fall to the side in a flowing curtain of scarlet. “Don’t feel like talking about it? Can’t say that I blame you. Here he was, marching over here so gallantly to protect you, while you called him names and berated him. That’s evil even by my standards and I make a viable vocation out of this.” One stride into a forward charge toward certain death, I froze. My shocked heart lurched into an awkward stutter beat. The cause of my surprise? Rowan, rolling to his side and yanking the dagger from his gut. The Countess’s painted lips pulled back in a sneer. Heels clicked across the floor with sharp snaps as she strode straight for him. “I hate it when people don’t have the courtesy to die the first time you kill them.” With the stiletto heel of her boot, she pinned Rowan’s wrist to the floor … then stomped. Rowan howled and writhed as blood spurted from his wound. His injured hand loosened around the hilt. Before the blade could clank to the ground, the vile enchantress scooped it up. Flipping it in her hand, she arched back for the death blow. “Nooooo!!” I channeled everything inside me. Pulling every emotion that ravaged me throughout this god-awful day into my core, I raised both hands and hit her with the full force of my telepathic fury. The dagger flew from her hand as she pinwheeled into the darkness. I rushed to Rowan’s side and eased him to a sitting position. “Row? Rowan?” It took a minute for his sleepy gaze to find me. Even then, his dilated pupils hinted consciousness would be fleeting. In the distance came a soft thud. The Countess must’ve found the other side of this massive hall. My little stunt bought us seconds only. “Row?” My fingers dug into his shoulders as I attempted to shake him awake. “Can you teleport? I don’t know any other way out of here and we need to go now!” In place of an answer, his eyes rolled back and his head lulled to the side. Like rapid-fire gunshots, her heels clicked closer, building around us in an ominous echo. I slapped Rowan softly once, then a second time with more vigor. “Rowan! Come on! One little poof, then you can pass out! I promise! Just get us out of here!” He woke with a jerk, a protective passion rising on his face. His tensed features sharpened. Turquoise eyes blazed as his injured hand weaved into my hair and pulled me to him. Blood dripped down the back of my neck and dampened my hair, yet pulling away never occurred to me. His lips brushed mine with a tentative question—a plea for acceptance. I hesitated for a fraction of a second before consenting with a resounding mutual urgency. Locked in each other’s embrace, we disappeared in a cloud of smoke.

Release Day Blitz: Hard as It Gets by Laura Kaye

Book Blurb:
Tall, dark, and lethal...
Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey's tattoo parlor. Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome--pure temptation to a very jaded Nick. He's left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander's daughter. Loyalty won't let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too. With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn't expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees. Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge...

Laura's Review: Tall, dark, and lethal, indeed! I was sold when I read the blurb and saw the cover and the book didn't disappoint either! Becca has no idea what she's getting involved in when she goes to Hard Ink Tattoo in an attempt to help her missing brother. Nick Rixey is more than a little jaded from his not-so-happy time in the military, but a sense of duty and a search for redemption keeps him from turning away from Becca. Immediately their involvement turns more serious than either of them knew or wanted. And from that moment, I was pulled into a gripping, suspenseful novel that was much edgier and grittier than I expected. But, I loved it! And of course, no book with a cover like this would get away without having some intense and steamy chemistry! This was the first full-length novel by Laura Kaye I've read, but it won't be the last!
Hard As It Gets: 4.5/5 stars

Review: Remembering Love by Nadine Christian

Blurb
When all is lost, how do you remember love?

When her beloved foster parents pass away, Holly discovers a past both shocking and heartbreaking: the murder/suicide of her biological parents on the South Pacific island of Pitcairn, famous for the HMAV Bounty mutineers. Travelling to a home she does not remember, Holly reconnects with long-lost childhood friend Jack. An old friendship quickly becomes more…until a dark secret is uncovered.

Will joyous love remembered become heartbreak? Can she find out the truth before someone else is hurt?

Laura's Review:
This book was refreshingly unique. Ms. Christian takes a typical childhood friends-to-lovers plotline that's been done a million times, but adds in some twists that make it truly her own. First, is this wonderful setting (that she happens to know quite well - and it shows in the detailed descriptions that make you feel like you are right there on the island with them), and then there is the tragedy of Holly's past that Jack has shared with her, making their bond even stronger. Parts of it felt a bit rushed, and the whole book could use a thorough copy-edit, but overall, I really enjoyed this romantic look at the world of Pitcairn Island.

Remembering Love: 4/5 stars

Note: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange of an honest review.

Review & Giveaway: For Real by Chelsea M. Cameron

BOOK SUMMARY:
Two people. One fake relationship. What could go wrong?
When virgin Shannon Travers gets fed up with her friends demanding that she find a boyfriend, she enlists the help of tattooed, mohawk-rocking graphic design student Jett. He’s more than happy to play along with their Fake Relationship, including the Ten Rules of Fake Dating that control-freak Shannon comes up with. Even if he likes to violate them. Repeatedly.
But what happens when Fake Dating starts to feel… not fake anymore? Will Shannon be willing to let go and embrace the first thing in her life that’s ever felt REAL?

 Laura's Review:

I don't know why, but I just love the "fake relationship" romance trope. Gets me hooked every time. This was the second book by Chelsea M. Cameron I've read and I enjoyed it just as much as the first one. She's perfected the light, fluffy romance novel that's perfect for an afternoon escape. Nothing too heavy or serious to weigh it down. I loved Shannon, I loved Jett (and his name!) - they worked perfectly together. Shannon's friends and the reasons for the fake relationship were odd - why would she be friends with such horrible people? - but I've learned not to let the question such things in romance novels linger too long and just go with it. A predictable yet still satisfying HEA finish tops of a great read.

For Real: 4/5 stars

Embrace Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway: Trouble Comes Knocking

Trouble Comes Knocking Synopsis:
It’s hard not to answer when trouble comes knocking

A girl who can’t forget…

Twenty-two-year-old Lucy Carver is like Sherlock Holmes in ballet flats, but her eidetic memory is more albatross than asset, and something she usually keeps hidden. When she notices that something’s amiss at her dead-end job, she jumps at the chance to finally use her ability for good. That is, until, a man is murdered, and she becomes the target of the killer.

A detective on his first case…

Detective Eli Reyes is overbearing, pompous, way too hot for Lucy’s own good, and seems as determined to ruin her relationship with her boyfriend, John, as finding the murderer. He brings Lucy in on the case, thinking she can help him get to the truth, only to cut her loose when he realizes he’s gotten far more than he ever bargained for.

A past that won’t go away…

When memories from her childhood invade her present, Lucy discovers a mystery bigger than she could have imagined. With the killer still after her, and Eli nowhere to be found, she takes things into her own hands, determined to expose the truth no matter what—before trouble comes knocking…again.

Laura's Review:
This book was part of the launch of Embrace, the New Adult line from Entangled; Given that, I was expecting a New Adult Romance...and while it had features that could squeeze it into that category, it really was more of a fun mystery-type novel - whose heat level is so tame, it could easily be billed as an older YA if the main character were to be a couple years younger. I read mostly for the romance in books, and that really takes a backseat to the main story of Lucy's eidetic memory (which is oddly referred to as a 'special ability' like it's a paranormal gift) and crime-solving implications thereof (think a NA book version of the TV shows Psych or The Mentalist.) I did love that concept and Ms. Duncanson's writing was sharp and descriptive and her characters well-developed. I could easily see this turning into a long-lasting series of novels, like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Turn up the romance just a notch, and I'd be hooked on reading many more like it.

Trouble Comes Knocking: 3.5/5 stars.

Note: I recevied an ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review.

Mary Duncanson Bio:
Mary Duncanson, who also writes as Mary Malcolm, lives in North Texas with a menagerie of animals and feral roommates. She is currently looking to adopt a husband, preferably housebroken, preferably as silly as her. When she’s not corraling her household, she’s talking to the characters in her head and hoping they talk back. When she’s not doing all that, she can be found wandering around Central Market with a happy, drooly foodie look on her face. Do not judge her, it is her Mecca.

Mary’s been writing since she was a teenager though spent quite a few years studying toward becoming a doctor before she realized she wanted to be a full-time author. Unfortunately, the people who own her student loans still want to be paid for the years they supported her medical dreams. Mary lives on a steady diet of coffee and chocolate and believes, like Eleanor Roosevelt, that people should believe in the beauty of their dreams. She also believes people should ignore the word should because really, it’s kind of a judgmental word. Mary dreams of one day living as a full-time, well paid novelist (hint, hint) and also of one day traveling to Chile to pay homage to her soul mate, Pablo Neruda. Heating Up the Holidays Blog Hop and Giveaway!

As leftover turkey and stuffing give way to stockings and little black dresses, this tantalizingly sexy eBook bundle offers up holiday-themed novellas from a trio of beloved romance authors. Lisa Renee Jones gives a dedicated reporter and a powerful businessman a chance to count their Thanksgiving blessings in Play with Me; Mary Ann Rivers presents Snowfall, the story of a woman who confronts a life-changing event—hopefully with a special man by her side—just in time for Christmas; and in Serena Bell’s After Midnight, an explosive New Year’s kiss leaves two strangers wondering whether they’ll ever see each other again.

PLAY WITH ME by Lisa Renee Jones

Kali Miller has spent three years reporting fluff stories, waiting for the article that will launch her career to new heights. When she suddenly finds herself forced to take a job as an executive secretary at a Vegas casino, Kali meets the subject of what will surely be a shocking exposé: her boss, Damion Ward, the arrogant and undeniably sexy CEO. But after Damion invites her to help him plan a Thanksgiving charity event, Kali begins to see another side of the man. And when she surrenders to the exhilarating tension simmering between them, Kali hopes her story will have a happy ending.

SNOWFALL by Mary Ann Rivers

Jenny Wright can’t get enough of her erotic conversations with someone she knows only as “C.” Flirting online helps Jenny temporarily escape confronting the changes to her life as she slowly loses her vision. Jenny’s occupational therapist, Evan Carlisle-Ford, is helping her prepare for the challenges ahead, but the forthright, trustworthy man can no longer ignore his growing attraction to his fiercely intelligent client. Now Jenny must choose between the safe, anonymous “C”—or the flesh-and-blood Evan, whose heated kisses can melt snow faster than it can fall.

AFTER MIDNIGHT by Serena Bell

The clock is ticking down to midnight on New Year’s Eve, and all Nora Hart and Miles Shephard can think about is kissing each other—even though they met just minutes before. Then, as fast as Miles enters Nora’s life, he’s gone . . . and she never even gets the name of the man she thinks might just be “the one.” One year later, Nora and Miles are reunited. The chemistry between them is just as strong as they remember. But Miles broke her heart once before—and this time around, Nora’s not sure whether she can give love a second chance.

Review:
I've only had the chance to read the first of these three novellas, Lisa Renee Jones' Play With Me and I loved it. It was short, but had the depth of a full-length romance novel. She never disappoints me with her appealing characters - even the tough ones have such a solid integrity and compassion, it is difficult to find one I have not fallen a bit in love with. I haven't read the next two in this bundle, but since I love holiday-themed romances, I cannot wait to get started!

Play With Me: 4/5 Stars.
