A woman.
A sinister house looming over the sea ...
He's a reclusive writer whose macabre imagination creates chilling horror novels. She's a down-on-her-luck actress reduced to staging kids' puppet shows. He knows a dozen ways to kill with his bare hands. She knows a dozen ways to kill with laughs.
But she's not laughing now. When she was a teenager, he terrified her. Now they're trapped together on a snowy island off the coast of Maine. Is he the villain she remembers or has he changed? Her head says no. Her heart says yes.

Laura's Review:
This book was unlike anything I've read by Susan Elizabeth Phillips before. Halfway through, I even told my co-blogger that it felt like someone else wrote it. The tone was so dark and eerie, which may have been intentional to go along with the isolate Maine island winter setting, but it had a decidedly un-romantic feel regardless. The characters were odd, the puppets were creepy, and I probably would have stopped reading it if it weren't for how much I adored SEP's previous books. And I'm glad I did keep reading, as it became a bit more positive as it went on. Secrets were revealed that drastically changed things (one I saw coming from the beginning and another twist that managed to surprise me until the end), and the main characters both became more likable. Usually, I want to read and re-read SEP's books as soon as I'm done with them (see my review for Call Me Irresistible.) I don't think that will happen with this one, but I'm glad I finished it, and fans of hers, especially those that like books a bit on the darker and suspenseful side, will enjoy this one as well.
Heroes are My Weakness: 3/5 stars.

I can tell by this reviewer's opinions on SEP's newest that as I've known all along, book reading is a very subjective occupation. You either like a book or you don't. You have writing styles you prefer, or not. You like romantic comedy, or not. You like erotic romance, or not. And so on. So while this reviewer thought the story was rather dark, it might not appear that way to someone else. I will just have to wait and see from my own reading of the book. Because read it I shall, since I really like SEP's stories. Thanks for the post. jdh2690@gmail.com
