Synopsis:

Sometimes the best man is the one you least expect…Faith Holland left her hometown after being jilted at the altar. Now a little older and wiser, she's ready to return to the Blue Heron Winery, her family's vineyard, to confront the ghosts of her past, and maybe enjoy a glass of red. After all, there's some great scenery there….

Like Levi Cooper, the local police chief—and best friend of her former fiancé. There's a lot about Levi that Faith never noticed, and it's not just those deep green eyes. The only catch is she's having a hard time forgetting that he helped ruin her wedding all those years ago. If she can find a minute amidst all her family drama to stop and smell the rosé, she just might find a reason to stay at Blue Heron, and finish that walk down the aisle.

Review:

This book's beginning was almost painful to get through. I've never been a fan of books that jump from the present to the past, and this one did that a lot. It also changed perspectives, which made the book even more difficult to follow. I probably would have stopped reading it if I hadn't read and loved previous Kristan Higgins books and it hadn't gotten a Kirkus Star (which I'm still more than a little confused by). I am glad I kept with it though, as the best parts were definitely in the end. There were some extremely sweet, touching moments between Faith and Levi, but I never felt that the chemistry and passion were quite enough. I would have liked less backstory and more relationship development.

Those who like a more straightforward romance will not enjoy plodding through this one to get to the ending, but it is worth getting to nonetheless.

The Best Man: 2.5/5 stars.

    1. Hi Mary! The few Kristan Higgins' books I've read before, I've really enjoyed, so I was a little disappointed in this one, but it was still very well written and sweet in the manner that we've come to love from her. Like I said, it got a Kirkus Star review and they are usually way tougher than I am to please, so maybe this was just a miss for me. Hope you like it better than I did! :)

  2. Thanks for your honest review :) I have heard good things about Higgins' books but have yet to read one. I actually enjoy books that have time leaps and/or are told from varying perspectives but I agree that it can be confusing at times.

For this reason, I am hesitant to read The Time Traveler's Wife and the movie The Lake House was difficult to keep track of.

    1. Thanks for stopping by Mona! If you like the time jumping aspect, you probably would enjoy this book a lot more than I did. If I remember correctly, Ms. Higgins (who could not be nicer), really enjoys time jumping for backstory, but it hasn't bothered me as much as it did here. I think my favorite of hers was My One and Only- which I highly recommend you pick up!
